Game 24 Tournament

At the APS Professional Learning & Conference Center, students from across APS recently showed off their math skills in the annual Game 24 Tournament. More than 50 students in grades 6-8 from 10 middle schools and P/K-8 schools participated in this year's tournament. Nearly 60 students from 15 elementary and P/K-8 schools also participated in a separate tournament.

In groups of four, students examined cards that included four numbers and calculated equations in any combination that equaled 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Whoever points to the card first has to explain their calculations out loud, and if they are correct, adds that card to their total score.

In the middle grades tournament, Aurora Quest's David Berg and Zak Nfaoui, and Columbia's Devin Philio and Autumn Kelly took top honors after the challenge round. The four students received certificates and trophies as middle school tournament winners. The overall winner David Berg earned a graphing calculator for his top place finish.

In the elementary grades tournament, Sixth Avenue's Jesse Frimpong, Vista PEAK Exploratory's Ashley Blake, and Mimi Rai and Hannah Butterworth of Aurora Quest took top honors, earning certificates and trophies. The overall winner Jesse Frimpong also earned math/puzzle tabletop games.

All competitors in both tournaments also earned medals and certificates for their excellent performances.

Congratulations to all the students who matched mathematical wits with each other in this year's Game 24 Tournament!

CareerTrek Helps Steer Students Toward Postsecondary Options

career-trekAurora Public Schools' eighth-grade students might be ready to jump out into the real world. Really. Well, almost.

Recently, all eighth graders from across the district traveled to the Professional Learning and Conference Center for the third annual CareerTrek where they met and chatted with employers and universities about the possibilities awaiting them once their K-12 education ends.  APS staff in the Postsecondary Workforce Readiness department collaborated with businesses and higher education institutions to develop relevant topics and a variety of hands-on activities to support students’ understanding of careers while reiterating the real world relevance of 21st Century Skills.

This year's theme, aptly titled Roadmap to Your Successful Future, proved exciting and engaging for attendees and aligned with the three goals of the APS strategic plan. CareerTrek exposes students to various career fields and supports the expectation that all students will have the plans, skills and credentials that they need upon graduation to shape a successful future.

Taking it a step further, organizers used racetrack decorations -- including a model race car -- throughout the venue to help students relate to the message. In addition to the more rigid programming, students also learned some of the basics, including how to tie a necktie and craft a resume.

South Middle School students reflect on their experience at CareerTrek

"I thought it was fun because I went around to all of these jobs, and I actually want to do them." – George West

"I got to discover jobs that I didn't know were out there, so I got interested in other jobs." – Aaliyah Jones

"I found out that I was interested in things I didn't expect to be interested in." – Jacqueline Bernal

APS Preschool Screening BannerAll children ages 3 or 4 on or before October 1 are age-eligible for the Aurora Public Schools Preschool Program. In order for your child to be considered, a parent or legal guardian must attend the preschool screening process. Your child must be present for the screening and you must bring the required registration documents. Visit http://admissions.aurorak12.org for a list of required documents. If your name does not appear on the child’s birth certificate, you must bring legal documentation of guardianship.

Appointments are not necessary. Due to a limited number of preschool slots, attendance at a screening doesn’t guarantee placement. For more information, visit http://ece.aurorak12.org or call 303-364-9371 or view the flier.

Digital-Badges-in-APS-PhotoStudents in APS have the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of 21st century skills acquired not only in traditional academic settings, but also in their communities and job experiences. Earning these credentials is an important part of Goal 3 of the APS 2020 Strategic Plan, which states that Every student will have credentials that open doors. Digital Badges help students open those doors by giving them the opportunity to tell a story about what they know and what they can do.

Learn how teachers in APS are bringing their students into the exciting world of digital badges and showing them what kinds of badges they can earn.

CH-Girls-Tech-Camp-60Aurora Public Schools recently hosted the seventh annual Girls Technology Camp! This day-long event linked sixth-grade female students from across the district with one another to engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experiences.

In addition to sessions on coding, 3-D design and snap circuits, the girls enjoyed taking apart and reconstructing Netbooks. As an added treat, they had an opportunity to tinker with robots, a 3D printer and a green screen photo booth. Powerful women in STEM fields led the workshops and reminded students that females can do anything they put their minds to.

We thank the APS Information Technology and Educational Technology departments for organizing such a lively event to empower our girls! Students left energized and motivated to pursue STEM careers. Some students even earned Digital Badges, credentials that will bring them one step closer to their dreams.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Isaac Slade, lead singer of The Fray, perform with students at Clyde Miller P-8 on January 22, 2018. Slade also conducted a music workshop for students at Aurora Frontier P-8.

Story excerpt:

"Educators, artists, and state leaders celebrated a new phase of Take Note Colorado on Monday. Five school districts are working to introduce more students to music and make Colorado the first state in the country to give every child the instruments and teachers they need to explore their creative side.

'I think it’s a very cool opportunity for us because we get to be exposed to different types of music of the world,' said Michael Agsam, an eighth grader at Aurora Frontier P-8."

The City of Aurora recently held a ceremony to recognize hundreds of Aurora Public Schools students as "Aurora Scholars” for the positive contributions they have made in their communities and schools. The annual event, now in its ninth year, was created to bring city officials, school district staff and families together to honor the achievements of Aurora’s future leaders.

One teacher-nominated student from each grade level (first through 12th) at every school in Aurora was recognized. Students received certificates and gifts donated by the community.

In APS, we believe every student has unique abilities that we must recognize and engage. Congratulations to the 2018 APS Aurora Scholars listed below for being incredible students!

Digital Badges in APS: What types of badges can students earn?

$

2018-19 School Year Begins With All Smiles!

The first day of school at Dartmouth was a busy one. Between shuffling kids to and from classes and the bustle of the cafeteria, Principal Moran Stone says the 2018-19 school year is off to a great start.

Hundreds of community members, representing many businesses and organizations across Aurora, have been helping us greet students and offer them a warm welcome. We thank all of our volunteers for taking time out of their busy days to connect with our students in this way. This is a great example of our APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan belief that our community shares the responsibility for student achievement.

We would like to welcome more than 40,000 students back to school and look forward to yet another wonderful year of accelerating learning for every APS student, every day.
